Visits and Projects

School Visits

We pride ourselves in the number of educational visits organised for the children each school year.

Visits can enhance the curriculum, for example bringing history or science to life, or can provide opportunities for experiences that would not otherwise be available to the children. Residential visits can develop independence and a real sense of teamwork and mutual support.

Each visit is well researched by the teacher in charge and a full risk assessment is carried out. Care is taken to ensure the visits are educational, safe, enjoyable, stimulating and well supervised by staff.

Visitors to School

Day visits take place to:

Yr 3: Brigantium (Roman Fort); Magna
Yr 4: Bretton Sculpture Park
Yr 5: Thwaites Mill

Yr 5: Kirkstall Abbey

Residential visits:

Yr 4: WMDC Centre at Hornsea

Every year a party of approximately 50 children spend a long weekend at Wakefield's own residential centre in Hornsea.

They develop team work and co-operation skills through a programme of varied activities including swimming, team games and a guided walk.

Other visits may include a trip to the local folk museum and attending church where they perform for the congregation which is always well received.

Yr 5: Barcelona

In April 2008 a party of 30 children and 10 staff are embarking on 'el viaje de una vida' (the trip of a lifetime)

They will be staying for a week at Hostal Barcelona and making many visits to explore the culture of that city.

We hope to keep you up to date as the trip progresses (technology permitting).

Yr 6:
Robinwood Activity Centre

Our visit to Robinwood Activity Centre, in Alston, Cumbria, provides our pupils with the opportunity to experience a real sense of adventure and achievement within safe, supportive and structured activities. High levels of supervision from both school and highly trained centre staff ensure that the three action packed days run smoothly and, above all, safely.

Twinning Project

Last year, Year 4 took part in a twinning project with children from a school in Batley.

World War II Day

As part of the year 6 history project on the main events of World War II and the lives of children during the world, we held a World War Two day when the children came dressed as evacuees. We survived an air raid, had our daily dose of cod liver oil and studied some of the papers from the 40s. We had a fantastic day as you can see from the pictures.

Grow it, Cook it, Ask it, Film it...

Southdale has been lucky enough to be chosen to take part in a National  Pilot project to raise children's awareness of healty eating and healthy lifestyles.

Each half term they are given a cooking lesson by a member of the 'Focus on Food' team or by one of our specially trained staff.

We will be making video diaries of what we grow and cook (watch this space for a web link in the future!).

Year 3 have been making healthy lunchboxes.

Staff visit to India

As part of their work with creativity in school Miss Gott and Miss Steeples were lucky enough to be chosen to visit Mumbai for a week in February 2008.

They had a wonderful time and fascinated us in assembly with their account of their stay and just a little of what they had learned.

Look below to download a powerpoint presentation of their visit.
