A Healthy Lunchbox
Preparing
First 3JT decided to make a healthy lunchbox. But of course you need to prepare for it – we had to know about all the different food types. Next we all decided what we would like in our lunchbox and drew it on a worksheet. We had to find out how much money we needed so we went on Sainsbury’s website and used the calculators to get a rough price for everything. Afterwards we got in groups and wrote down everything we wanted to buy on a tally chart. We went round all the tally charts and we decided how many things we needed. Then we priced our own lunchbox. We all wrote to Mrs. Eccles to ask if we could go - it’s a good job she let us after all that hard work. The big finish… 3JT calculated all the costs together the cost was £62.20. A whopper price hey!
Shopping
We went on a shopping trip to Ossett Town Centre. Everyone had a job – there was a bag carrier, a list holder, a treasurer, two mathematicians and a leader. We walked up to the shops in groups. Our groups had to buy different things: drinks, treats, (of course the treats were healthy though!), dairy, protein, fats, carbohydrate, and fruit and veg. First we went up to the Green
groceries for the fruit and veg group to get all the fruits and veg we needed. While some people went inside, we had a test on our types of foods. When we got to the supermarket, we split up in our groups and bought the things on our list. We had to check to see that we had enough money to buy the food. Our group had to borrow 20p from another group, because we didn’t have enough. When we had paid, the bag packer had to pack the things and carry them back to school. Our bag had all the drinks, so it was too heavy for me to carry! Mr. Bairstow had to help.

Eating
When we’d done all the preparing and shopping, before we could eat the food we had brought, we had to make the sandwiches and prepare the fruit and veg. All of us had picked healthy things to go in our lunchboxes. We took all the food to the art room and laid it out. We had already baked the treats and put them in tins. When everybody had made their lunches, we went into the secret garden and had a picnic. It was a lovely day and we had learned how to use a calculator, how to use a website and what the different food groups were. We all had a fabulous time! We really enjoyed the picnic.
